Central Africa’s Democratic Republic of Congo is about the last place one would expect to find a symphony orchestra. Its civil war has raged for generations and monthly incomes there wouldn’t be enough buy a cheap used violin. But when a laid-off pilot’s dream of playing classical music met up with a people’s desire to transcend their bleak existence, the seed of a musical miracle took root in the capital city of Kinshasa 20 years ago. The result is the Kimbanguist Symphony Orchestra and a 60 MINUTES story with elements of perseverance, music and joy perfectly suited for an Easter Sunday broadcast. Bob Simon reports “Joy in the Congo” on 60 MINUTES, Sunday, April 8 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Photo: CBS NEWS©2012 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.

She couldn’t talk, but she could still curse a blue streak. Chart-topping singer Adele, under orders to be silent for weeks after throat surgery, found an app that would allow her phone to voice the spicy language she typed into it. That’s one of the stories the British singer, who is up for six Grammys Sunday night, tells Anderson Cooper in her first interview since that surgery, which she discusses for the first time. Adele will also sing for Cooper in her first public performance since the operation in a 60 MINUTES profile to be broadcast Sunday, Feb. 12 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

60 MINUTES Correspondent and CBS EVENING NEWS Anchor Scott Pelley (l.) talks to former Cuyahoga Country Treasurer Jim Rokakis beside an abandoned Cleveland home for a 60 MINUTES report on the effects of the foreclosure crisis on neighborhoods. Rokakis explains that thieves have scavenged the siding off this house and stolen anything valuable inside. Homes like these are lowering the property values in areas and many times they are razed and converted to green space to prevent further real estate value erosion. Rokakis is leading efforts to destroy thousands of such homes in Cleveland, which has a vacancy rate of 19 percent.. Former owners of homes like these either couldn’t or wouldn’t continue to make payments on properties worth far less than the mortgage on them. Pelley’s report will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday Dec. 18 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Photo: CBS NEWS©2011 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.
