Andy Rooney, the 60 MINUTES commentator known to generations for his wry, humorous and contentious television essays – a unique genre he is credited with inventing – died Friday November 4, in the hospital in New York City of complications following minor surgery. In the only interview Ruth Madoff has given about her husband’s crimes, she tells Morley Safer she and Bernard were so distraught over the burden of those crimes that they attempted suicide together. Safer also speaks to Madoff’s son, Andrew, for a story that will provide the first inside account from the immediate family of the man who stole billions of dollars. Andy Rooney in his last regular appearance on 60 MINUTES. Rooney, 92, will announce in his essay on Sunday that after doing the broadcast’s end piece since 1978, he will step away from appearing regularly on the program that made him an American icon. In addition, Morley Safer interviews Rooney for a segment that captures the personality that earned him the title of America’s favorite curmudgeon. Both will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday Oct. 2 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
