PAPANDREOU TELLS PELLEY: “WE’RE AT A TIPPING POINT. WE WORK TOGETHER, WE INTEGRATE, OR WE WILL START SPLINTERING”
Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou urges closer integration to solve the European debt crisis. Papandreou sat down with CBS EVENING NEWS Anchor and Managing Editor Scott Pelley for an interview that will be broadcast tonight, June 8 on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.
In the interview, Papandreou discusses the financial and political consequences of a potential Greek departure from the Euro zone, including the possible negative impact on the U.S. economy. Papandreou also tells Pelley that European leaders must show a commitment to an integrated Europe.
An excerpt of tonight’s interview is below.
PELLEY: This is the acid test, if you will, about whether the E.U. survives – whether the Euro survives, whether this whole idea of European integration is possible?
PAPANDREOU: I think we’re at a tipping point. We work together, we integrate, or we will start splintering, and that will have a major impact, one way or another, around the world. If we’re successful, it will help the world economy. It’ll help the U.S. economy. If we’re not successful, there'll be a very negative impact on the U.S. economy also.
