CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT STEVE HARTMAN GOES “ON THE ROAD” IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH BEHIND A WORLD WAR II MYSTERY

THE TWO-PART REPORT BEGINS TONIGHT ON THE “CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY”

CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman goes “On the Road” in search of the truth behind a World War II mystery in a two-part report that begins tonight, Tuesday, June 5 on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

Peggy Harris of Vernon, Texas, never learned what happened to her husband Billie, a World War II fighter pilot who disappeared over Nazi-occupied Northern France on July 17, 1944. Over the years, she received contradictory information about her husband’s status.

As late as 2005, Harris was told by her congressman, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), that her husband was still listed in the National Archives as “missing in action.”

In tonight’s report, Hartman interviews Harris and Billie’s cousin, Alton Harvey, in Vernon, Texas. Hartman then travels with Harris to France where she visits Billie’s grave in Normandy. In the second installment, which will be broadcast on Wednesday, June 6, Hartman learns what really happened to Billie in the skies over France, and why residents of a small farm town have been honoring him as a hero for the last 68 years.

Patricia Shevlin is the Executive Producer of the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY.
