CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT BOB ORR REPORTS ON A CONTROVERSIAL LICENSE PLATE SCANNER PROGRAM USED TO FIND DELINQUENT TAXPAYERS AND CAPTURE FUGITIVES – TONIGHT ON THE “CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY”

CBS News Justice and Homeland Security Correspondent Bob Orr reports on a controversial license plate scanner program used to find delinquent taxpayers and capture fugitives. The report will be broadcast tonight, June 22, on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

In tonight’s report, Orr goes on patrol with Officer Yancey Anthony on a Maryland highway where scanners mounted on police cruisers scan and photograph license plates of passing cars, sounding alarms when possible violators are spotted. However, critics cite privacy concerns, with the state of New Hampshire banning license plate scanners altogether.

In Maryland, the data are funneled to the state’s Intelligence Center, which connects and monitors 367 license plate readers around the state. Orr speaks with Assistant U.S. Attorney Harvey Eisenberg, who oversees the network.
