THOMAS TELLS CBS NEWS’ DAVID MARTIN: “SINCE THEY LOST SOMEBODY THAT THEY LOVE SO MUCH, I THINK THEY NEED ALL THE SUPPORT THAT THEY CAN GET”

Will Thomas, 13, of McLean, Va., discusses Operation Hawkeye, his basketball campaign to raise $300,000 for the families of fallen soldiers, tonight, August 6 on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

For the past year, Thomas has been playing basketball to raise money for the families of 30 special operations forces killed a year ago today when their helicopter was shot down on a night raid in Afghanistan.

“Since they lost somebody that they love so much, I think they need all the support they can get,” Thomas tells CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin in tonight’s report.

Last year, Thomas spent three days and more than 50 hours shooting 20,317 baskets. He raised $50,000. His goal is $300,000.
