Steve Swenson has been named as Senior Vice President and Market Manager, CBS RADIO Washington, D.C., it was announced today by Dan Mason, President and CEO, CBS RADIO.  Swenson, a 30-year veteran of the radio industry, who currently oversees the Company’s two all-news stations in New York (WCBS 880 and 1010 WINS), will now take on the day-to-day responsibility of managing CBS RADIO’s five diverse stations in our nation’s capital - WIAD-FM (Hot AC), WJFK-FM (Sports), WLZL-FM (Spanish), WPGC-FM (Urban) and WHFS-AM (News/Talk).  The appointment is effective on Monday, June 13.

“Steve has had an extraordinary career - his name being associated with some of America’s most successful and best known radio stations,” said Mason.  “He has incredible major-market experience in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. and is well regarded in the industry for his business acumen and on-air programming judgment.  Quite simply, we’re fortunate to have someone of his caliber on our team who can capitalize on the stations’ heritage positions in the market.”

Since 1998, Swenson has served as Vice President and General Manager of WCBS 880.  Currently the tri-state area’s No. 1-rated station in morning drive, WCBS 880 is consistently among the most popular outlets in the market for news and information, and the winner of numerous awards for journalism excellence.  Also the radio flagship of the New York Yankees, WCBS 880 was the top billing radio station in 2009 and 2010 in the New York market.

Swenson took on the additional responsibility of overseeing 1010 WINS in 2008.  He had previously been News Director of the legendary all-news station from 1985-87 before being elevated to Executive Editor/Program Director (1987-96).  During his tenure, the station experienced listenership levels higher than any other station in the country and dominated in morning drive.

For two years (1996-98), Swenson was Vice President and General Manager of WTOP-AM in Washington, D.C.  He was instrumental in extending the station’s reach into Northern Virginia, a fast-growing area, with simulcasts on the FM band.

Swenson was graduated from the University Of California, Santa Barbara.  He began his career in 1980 at KFWB in Los Angeles as a news assistant.  He later held stints as a writer and producer before quickly rising to the position of Assistant News Director.

At CBS RADIO Washington, D.C., Swenson replaces Sam Rogers who has decided to resign from his position as Senior Vice President/Market Manager of the cluster.  He will remain in his current role until Friday, June 10 to help prepare for the transition.

“On behalf of everyone at CBS RADIO, I want to thank Sam for all his hard work and many contributions over the years.  He is leaving as a friend of the Company and we wish him all the best.”
