McILROY, MICKELSON, WATSON, KAYMER, WATNEY AND FOWLER COMPETE IN STAR-PACKED FIELD AT "WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP" ON CBS SPORTS MAY 7-8
The world's top players, including defending champion Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer, Nick Watney and Rickie Fowler compete this weekend at the PGA TOUR's WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP as CBS Sports broadcasts third- and final-round coverage from Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 (3:00-6:00 PM, ET; both days), live on the CBS Television Network.
Jim Nantz, five-time National Sportscaster of the Year and 2009 and 2008 Emmy Award winner for "Outstanding Sports Personality, Play-by-Play," now in his 26th year covering golf at CBS, serves as anchor of CBS Sports' golf coverage. Sir Nick Faldo, winner of six majors and more-than 40 tournaments worldwide, serves as lead analyst alongside Nantz in the 18th hole tower. Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and Gary McCord at the 16th. David Feherty and Peter Kostis serve as on-course reporters. Lance Barrow is Coordinating Producer and Steve Milton is Director of CBS Sports' golf coverage. Harold Bryant is Vice President, Production, CBS Sports.
Last year, McIlroy shot a course-record final round 10-under 62 to win his first PGA TOUR event by four strokes over Mickelson. Since the first tournament in 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship annually attracts one of the top fields in golf. This year is no exception with McIlroy, Mickelson, Watson, Kaymer, Watney, Fowler, Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Camilo Villegas, Jhonattan Vegas, Padraig Harrington, Anthony Kim, Martin Laird, Sergio Garcia, V.J. Singh, Angel Cabrera, Justin Rose, Charley Hoffman, J.B. Holmes, Fredrik Jacobson, Paul Casey, David Duval, Rory Sabbatini, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson, D.A. Points, Jonathan Byrd, Mark Wilson, Andres Romero, Tim Herron, Stuart Appleby, Steve Flesch, Paul Goydos, Robert Allenby, Hunter Mahan, Steve Marino, Rocco Mediate, Ricky Barnes, Kevin Na, Boo Weekley, as well local favorite Davis Love III, playing here for the ninth consecutive year.
OFF THE TEE WITH DAVID FEHERTY
(On Rory McIlroy's return to Quail Hollow): He finished second the week after the Masters so he has shown that he can bounce back from both bad rounds and bad weeks. His finish at the Wells Fargo last year was the best of the year by a comfortable margin. That was a most stunning finish to a tournament from an untested player that I have ever seen in my life. Six three's in row for 62 in the last round on a golf course like Quail Hollow? It's unthinkable. I expect him to contend this week. He loves the golf course and has good memories of it. And, for the first time in his career he kind of has something to prove. He really hasn't had that up until now. He has shown himself to be like a Top-10 player in the world and he could quite easily be No. 1 before long.
(On Quail Hollow): It's arguably the best golf course of the year. The quality of the golf course is more important than the amount of money they play for or how their families are treated or what kind of courtesy cars they drive. Quail Hollow is one of the all-time great golf courses. It's always going to get a great field because of that.
(On Thursday-Friday featured group Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson, Gary Woodland): I will be interested to see if Phil can get it past Woodland. Woodland may actually vaporize the ball and I don't know if there is ruling for that.
