COURTSIDE NOTES WITH CBS SPORTS ANALYSTS BILLY PACKER AND CLARK KELLOGG

Billy Packer on Strength of Schedule, D.J. White and Kelvin Sampson

(On Strength of Schedule): Its almost time for the RPI to start raising it's head. I'm not one of these bracket- type guys, but a couple of things really jump out at you. When you start talking about bracketing, the team with the best combination, where they rank in the country and where they are on the RPI and the Sagarin Poll, is probably Tennessee. They are ranked in the polls in the top 10 and in the top 20 in regard to schedule difficulty. Arizona is in the top 25 in ranking and top five in scheduling difficulty. Then you look at teams like Kansas and Memphis, number one and two in the country, respectively but both of them are over 100 in schedule difficulty. For those guys it is trying to figure out who the number one seeds are. It would be hard to assume at this point that Kansas and Memphis aren't number one seeds but when you look at schedule difficulty there may be a reason why they are sitting there. They're really good. If their schedule difficulty was a little harder they might not be undefeated. But that wouldn't take away their ability to be number one seeds. The number one schedule difficulty team in the country is Miami of Ohio. I guarantee you could give a quiz asking who has the most difficult schedule in the country and I don't think many people would say Miami of Ohio. But that's basically where they're standing right now...

(On D.J. White): On a national basis, people aren't talking about him as a National Player of the Year like some people because of all the attention Eric Gordon has received. They're not even talking about him being the Big Ten Player. Hall this year has shown he's a leader, he's shown he's a mature player that has overcome injury in his career and right now may be playing as consistently well as any player in the United States...(On Kelvin Sampson): Kelvin Sampson has yet to lose a game on his home court, which is a nice way to build a following in Indiana. It's the first time people at Indiana feel comfortable, post-Bobby Knight Era, to have a coach that can win consistently.

Clark Kellogg on Top Ranked Teams Being Upset

(On Recent Upsets): Over the next few weeks I'm expecting to see more of the same as conference play moves along. Parity makes it probable and the unpredictability of youth, coupled with the fragile dynamics of "team" assures it. There will continue to be unranked teams beating ranked teams, especially at home. There also will be the occasional eyebrow raiser, like Maryland winning at Chapel Hill, which very few would have predicted. Yours truly certainly didn't. I'd venture to guess only Gary Williams, his staff and players expected to come out on top. That's all that matters....for more from Clark Kellogg log on to CBSSports.com.
