PHIL SIMMS
(On Carolina QB Cam Newton): The quarterback can only do so much. When I look at the Carolina Panthers I don’t have questions about the quarterback. I have questions about a lot of other parts of the football team, but not about the quarterback.
(On Carolina’s Defense): There is no doubt when you watch them, they’re getting better. They played much better the last four games. When you watch them play on TV, they are hustling and playing fast. If you don’t do those two things you have no chance of being a good defense. At least they have that going right now. They have a few players that are really starting to play well. Pass rushers always can make a defense look a lot better and it looks like the Carolina pass rushers have gotten better in the past few weeks.
(On Peyton Manning running his team’s offense): He’s been in control of offenses for so long. Between him doing it and listening to the coaches that he’s always played for, he knows the style of offense that is going to work in the NFL. He has a group of plays that he knows are going to work in the NFL. He knows them better than anybody. You can see the Denver Broncos running those plays. Every week the Denver Broncos have plays that they know are going to work in their game that they can put in because they run them every single week. That is a great head start on most NFL teams who are always looking for a way to score points. The Broncos already have it built in. It’s just about them going out there and executing.
