(ON NEW YORK JETS’ MARK SANCHEZ):

Gannon: I think they’ve been reluctant to play Tim Tebow all season. That tells you something about how they feel about his skills as a quarterback. You look at Mark Sanchez, he’s thrown more interceptions this year than touchdowns. I just don’t see improvement with him. I see a quarterback that has lost his way. I see a quarterback that has lost his confidence. And I don’t blame him. They’re not good enough around him and that’s a problem. But here’s the key, look at where the Jets are. Technically, they’re not eliminated from the playoffs. They’re 5-7. Had they been eliminated, I’d say we’d see Greg McElroy this week against Jacksonville for sure. But because of the fact that they’re still in the playoff hunt, we could see Mark Sanchez get another opportunity on the road.

Fouts: Once they brought in Tim Tebow, you could see the confidence start to slide with Mark Sanchez. But I think he’ll be back with the Jets. I think the Jets have about 8 million reasons to bring him back.

Beuerlein: He’s a guy who is absolutely a zero on a scale of 1-10 in terms of confidence in himself. He may be on the negative side. He doesn’t believe in himself right now. And we all know that once you lose that confidence as a quarterback, you lose not only your ability to perform and produce consistently, but you lose the confidence of your teammates. Once that happens, it’s a very hard thing to get back. So I think with the way he carried himself after (the game), he’s going to have a hard time convincing anybody that he belongs in the starting quarterback role in New York… Another interesting thing, as far as long term is concerned, is what does the future hold for Rex Ryan? Is he going to be back next year? Depending on how the rest of the season goes, a new coach coming in might be exactly what Mark Sanchez needs. It might be time to clean house.

(ON SAN FRANSCISCO 49ERS’ COLIN KAEPERNICK):

Gannon: There’s a couple plays that Colin Kaepernick would love to have back yesterday – certainly the safety and of course the pitch on the option. But think about this off-season and what the 49ers did at the wide receiver position. They went out and added Randy Moss. They went out and added Mario Manningham. They drafted A.J. Jenkins in the first round. Why did they do these things? To create more explosive plays offensively. And that’s why they’ve made the change to Colin Kaepernick. I love the way this guy rips the football. I love the fact that he runs like a deer. I feel that they feel the upside is better right now with Colin Kaepernick than it is to go back to Alex Smith.

Beuerlein: I just don’t think it’s the time to run an experiment with Colin Kaepernick. If you’re going to put him in there, you have to be willing to take the good with the bad. The bad, we saw a little bit of it yesterday. The safety being one. But when they called that play, yes it was a bad play-call, the option, when they were backed up on their end of the field. But a veteran quarterback would not try to make that play. I think Alex Smith would have picked that ball up and tried to just jam it up in there and protect the football. He’d understand the significance of every play in a football game. I just think that Jim Harbaugh, I’m not questioning him because everything he’s done so far has been right, but my comment is you better be willing to take the bad with the good in a situation like this.

Fouts: You’ve got to like the way Kaepernick fell on his sword yesterday. It was his fault. He did make a couple of bad plays there. What he has to realize is that this 49ers’ defense is the strength of this team. At times, he has to play to the defense. In the game against the Rams yesterday, the defense was absolutely superb. So he has to remember that. And I don’t think Harbaugh can go back and forth now with quarterbacks. He’s got Kaepernick in there. It’s toward the end of the season. They have a great defense. If you go back and forth now with Alex Smith, you’re just causing more problems.
