DIVERSE SLATE OF ARTISTS RECORD WEEDS'

QUIRKY THEME SONG FOR SERIES' THIRD SEASON,

PREMIERING AUGUST 13 ON SHOWTIME

Joan Baez, Donovan, Angelique Kidjo, Randy Newman, The Shins,

Billy Bob Thornton & Others Record Versions of "Little Boxes"

 

July 6, 2007 - For the second season in a row, a diverse slate of artists have recorded special renditions of "Little Boxes," the theme song of SHOWTIME's award-winning comedy series WEEDS, it was announced today by Showtime President of Entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, and Lionsgate President of Television Programming and Production, Kevin Beggs. 

 

Originally penned and recorded by Malvina Reynolds in 1962, the tune will be performed by a bevy of acclaimed artists, including Grammy® Life Achievement Award winner Joan Baez; iconic singer-songwriter Donovan; ex-Spearhead frontman Michael Franti; hip-hop band The Individuals; four-time Grammy® nominated Afro-Pop singer Angelique Kidjo; Latin band Kinky; experimental rockers Man Man; the renowned, multiple-Grammy® winning Randy Newman (whose version kicks off premiere night, Monday, August 13th at 10 p.m. PT/ET); Oakland-based glam pop band Persephone's Bees; indie pop band The Shins; and Oscar® winner Billy Bob Thornton.  Each of the third season's 15 episodes will feature a new version. Last season's roster included Grammy® winner Elvis Costello, Englebert Humperdinck, Death Cab for Cutie and Regina Spektor, among others.

 

Produced by Lionsgate in association with Tilted Productions, WEEDS follows suburban mother, Mary-Louise Parker in her Golden Globe®-winning portrayal of Nancy Botwin, who deals marijuana in order to make ends meet after her husband dies unexpectedly. Golden Globe® Award-nominated for Best Comedy Series, the series also stars Elizabeth Perkins, Kevin Nealon, Justin Kirk, Tonye Patano, Romany Malco, Hunter Parrish, Alexander Gould, Andy Milder and Allie Grant. Season 3 special guest stars will include Matthew Modine, Mary-Kate Olsen, Carrie Fisher, and Zooey Deschanel.
