SEASON 4 SYNOPSES

 

401 – “Simple Pleasures” - Directed by  John Wells  - Written by John Wells       

As we catch up with the Gallagher clan, Fiona is dividing her time between caring for the household and working at Worldwide Cup with her boss/boyfriend Mike Pratt.  While her job and relationship are going smoothly, life at home is thrown into a state of upheaval with the reappearance of a drug-addled and deathly ill Frank.  With Lip off at college and Ian still missing, Fiona attempts to connect with Debbie and Carl, who are dealing with the upheaval of their adolescent hormones (or lack thereof). 

 

402 - “My Oldest Daughter” - Directed by Mimi Leder  -  Written by Nancy Pimental

Fiona begins to enjoy the perks of living life just above the poverty line. She uses her newly activated health benefits to take the kids for checkups. However, when a road rage incident damages the company car, Fiona tells a much bigger lie about how it happened.  Meanwhile, Lip seems to have lost his mojo as he struggles in school and with the ladies.

403 - Like Father, Like Daughter” - Directed by Sanaa Hamri -  Written by Sheila Callaghan

Frank stalks his previously unseen daughter, Sammi, and is surprised to find out she has a son, Chuck.  Meanwhile, Fiona and Mike are getting serious.  Also, Carl begins stealing dogs and holding them for ransom so that he can earn some drug money for Frank. Sheila has her first successful online date with Native American cowboy Roger Running Tree.

404 - Strangers on a Train - Directed by Pete Segal  -  Written by Etan Frankel

Against her better judgment, Fiona continues her secret affair with Robbie.  The situation nearly boils over when Mike shows up at Robbie’s apartment while Fiona is inside. Fiona is able to hide just in time before her infidelity can be exposed. 

 

Frank, in increasingly dire health straits due to liver disease, attempts to contrive an “accident” that will provide an ample insurance payout to cover the cost of a potential transplant.

 

 

SHAMELESS SEASON 4 BIO’S

EMMY ROSSUM – “Fiona Gallagher”

 Actress/Singer Emmy Rossum has been captivating audiences with her diverse, extraordinary talents for over a decade – and she’s only 25 years old.  Rossum’s acting performance in SONGCATCHER earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category of Best Debut Performance.  Four years later in 2004, her starring performance as “Christine” in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination, as well as the National Board of Review’s Best Female Breakthrough Performance Award and the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Best Young Actress Award in 2005.  Rossum can be seen starring in the fourth season of Showtime’s dark comedy series SHAMELESS, premiering January 12th.  Based on the long-running British series of the same title, SHAMELESS, from Warner Bros. TV and John Wells Productions, revolves around the Gallaghers, a working-class Chicago clan dealing with the recession. The mother is not present, and the alcoholic patriarch (William H. Macy) usually ends up passed out on the living-room floor, so their smart but unpredictable older daughter, Fiona (Rossum), is tasked with keeping her five younger brothers and sisters on the straight and narrow.

 

In film, Rossum starred in last year’s BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, based on the popular young-adult series of the same title.  She also starred as “Alexa” in the indie-drama DARE, starring opposite actor Zach Gilford.  The film premiered in official competition at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in November 2009.  Other past film credits include DRAGONBALL, POSEIDON, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW with Jake Gyllenhaal, and the Clint Eastwood directed drama MYSTIC RIVER.  Her television credits include guest starring appearances on “Law and Order,” and “The Practice.”

 

In 2007, Rossum recorded her first album for Geffen records, “Inside Out,” which showcased her classically trained voice as the primary instrument.  She wrote and recorded all her own songs. She is currently working on her second album, “Sentimental Journey,” a collection of 1940s standards, which will be released in early 2013.

 

Rossum began her theatrical career at the age of seven when she began singing the children’s roles at the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center. Between the ages of seven and twelve she was trained there in stagecraft and classical vocal technique and performed in five languages in 20 different operas.

 

Rossum is the Youth Ambassador for the international organization Youth AIDS, which works to educate young people in sixty countries on the prevention and treatment of AIDS. Rossum travels internationally raising awareness of the pandemic by speaking at schools, universities and government forums.

 

Rossum was born in New York City in 1986 and attended the Spence School until 1996. She earned her high school degree through Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) and Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development (CTD).

 

 

WILLIAM H. MACY – “Frank Gallagher”

 

William H. Macy, an Oscar and Golden Globe nominee and Emmy and SAG Award winner, is one of the most distinguished talents of his generation. Macy currently stars in the Showtime series “Shameless,” which premiered on January 9, 2011. “Shameless” has been renewed for a fourth season and will return in January 2014.

 

Macy recently wrapped production on “Rudderless” in which he serves as director and executive producer. The film follows a grieving father who stumbles across a box of his deceased son’s demo tapes and lyrics and forms a band in the hope of finding some catharsis. The film stars Selena Gomez, Felicity Huffman and Billy Crudup. He also recently wrapped production on “Walter” directed by Anna Mastro and co-starring Milo Ventimiglia, Neve Campbell and Peter Facinelli. The film is about a ticket-taker at the local cinema who believes he is the son of God.

 

Macy was recently seen in “A Single Shot,” where a tragic death of a young girl starts a tense game of cat and mouse between John Moon (Sam Rockwell) and the backwater criminals out for his blood. Directed by David M. Rosenthal, the film also stars Melissa Leo and Jeffrey Wright and was released on September 20, 2013.

 

Macy was also seen in “The Sessions,” the story of a 36-year-old man (John Hawkes) with an iron lung who decides he no longer wishes to be a virgin. With the help of his priest (Macy), he contacts a professional sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to help him. Distributed by Fox Searchlight, the film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and was released on October 19, 2012.

 

He was last seen in The Weinstein Company’s “Dirty Girl,” which was released on October 7, 2011. The cast includes Juno Temple, Milla Jovovich and Mary Steenburgen. He was also seen in the Lionsgate film “Lincoln Lawyer” based on the novel by Michael Connelly and starring Matthew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei.

 

In 2007, Macy appeared in the global blockbuster “Wild Hogs” opposite John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and Tim Allen.  In 2006 Macy appeared in the independent feature “Bobby,” based on fictionalized events leading up to the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. In 2005 he starred in the independent film “Edmund,” an adaptation of the David Mamet play and “Thank you for Smoking” opposite Aaron Eckhart.  The same year Macy appeared in the marine-based action adventure "Sahara," which also starred Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz. In 2004 he appeared in "Cellular" starring opposite Kim Basinger.

 

Macy received critical acclaim for his role in the romantic drama "The Cooler." The supporting cast included Alec Baldwin, Maria Bello, Shawn Hatosy, and Ron Livingston.  Macy was also seen stealing scenes in the critically-acclaimed feature, "Seabiscuit," the American epic of triumph and perseverance set during the Great Depression. Macy was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Tick Tock McLaughlin and the film was nominated for Best Picture.

 

Macy may be best known for his portrayal of Jerry Lundergaard in "Fargo," for which he received an Oscar Nomination and won an Independent Spirit Award as Best Supporting Actor.

On the small screen, Macy received a 2007 Emmy nomination for his role in “Umney’s Last Case,” 2005 Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG Award, Writers Guild Award nominations for “The Wool Cap,” 2004 Emmy nomination for his performance in “Stealing Sinatra,” 2000 Emmy nomination for his guest role on “Sports night,” 2000 Emmy nomination for “A Slight Case of Murder,” and a 1997 Emmy nomination for his guest role on “ER.” Additionally, in 2002, Macy received critical acclaim for his role as Bill Porter in “Door to Door” which he also co-wrote. The film was nominated for 12 Emmys and won 6 including Outstanding Made for Television Movie. Macy won the Outstanding Lead Actor category and Outstanding Writing for a Television Movie category with Steven Schachter.

 

His movie of the week credits include "Reversible Errors," "A Murderous Affair," "Heart of Justice," "Standoff at Marion," and the miniseries' "Andersonville," "The Murder of Mary Phagan" and "The Awakening Land."  In addition to the politically charged BBC telefilm "The Writing on the Wall," Macy also appeared in two Mamet vehicles, "The Water Engine" and Showtime's "Texan."  Also with Steven Schachter, Macy has written several television scripts, including an episode of "Thirtysomething," the HBO movie "Above Suspicion" and the USA Networks movie "The Con" starring Macy and Rebecca DeMornay.  He also was seen in a regular guest role in the Showtime original series "Out of Order," also starring Eric Stoltz and Felicity Huffman.

 

In 1972 Macy co-founded the St. Nicholas Theater along with David Mamet, and Steven Schachter in Chicago. Macy originated roles for several of Mamet's classic original productions, among them, Bobby in American Buffalo, and Lang in The Water Engine, soon establishing his feature film presence with writer/director Mamet.  He continued with Mamet as a Mafioso driver in "Things Change," a Marine in "House of Games" and an FBI agent in "Wag the Dog."   Moving to New York in 1980, he continued to build his reputation in the theater as an originator of new roles, in such off-Broadway productions as Baby With the Bathwater, The Dining Room (later filmed for PBS - "Great Performances") Life During Wartime, Mr. Gogol and Mr. Preen, Bodies, Rest and Motion, and Mamet's Prarie du Chen, Oh Hell, and Oleanna.  His stage credits, approaching fifty during his ten years in New York, also include the Broadway production of Our Town, Tony Award winner for Best Ensemble.  Macy was also seen on the London stage in the spring of 2000, where he co-starred in the revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo at the Donmar Warehouse.  Following the run in London, the play moved to the Atlantic Theater Company in New York for a record breaking run.

 

Macy is married to actress Felicity Huffman.  They reside in Los Angeles with their two daughters. 

 

 

JEREMY ALLEN WHITE – “Lip Gallagher”

 

JEREMY ALLEN WHITE is a 22 year old actor and a breakout star of the Showtime hit series SHAMELESS.  The show just started shooting its fourth season and is currently the second highest rated series on the network.  Jeremy’s film credits include Antonio Campos’ AFTERSCHOOL in which he starred alongside Ezra Miller, THE TIME BEING opposite Frank Langella, and YOU CAN’T WIN opposite Michael Pitt.   Recently, he also appeared in the comedy MOVIE 43 with Elizabeth Banks, Emma Stone, Kate Winslet, and Gerard Butler.  Jeremy is also set to play the lead in the DreamWorks feature GLIMMER.

 

 

EMMA KENNEY – “Debbie Gallagher”

 

Born in Manhattan, Emma Kenney realized her passion for performing at age four.  Since then, she has appeared in numerous national commercials as well as voiceovers.  Since becoming a series regular on "Shameless", she has also recurred on "Boardwalk Empire" in guest spot and voiced the character “Marigold” on the Twentieth Century Fox animated feature, "Epic."  In addition to acting Kenney also has enthusiasm for being behind the camera. Emma directed her first movie, “The New Girl in Town,” which was honored as a finalist at the 2009 New Jersey International Film Festival, making Emma the youngest filmmaker ever to receive that honor.  Due to her directorial success, New York Magazine, Fox-5 TV in New York and New Jersey Monthly magazine all featured stories on Kenney’s accomplishment.  When she is not acting or directing, she loves playing with her animals (one day, she hopes to open an animal shelter but for the time being is volunteering on weekends in one).  Kenney is now splitting her time between New Jersey and Los Angeles. 

 

 

ETHAN CUTKOSKY – “Carl Gallagher”

 

Ethan Cutkosky started acting at four years old in commercials and advertising campaigns. His first film break came at age seven when he appeared in FRED CLAUS, opposite Vince Vaughn.  A year later, Cutkosky landed a major role in the horror film THE UNBORN with Gary Oldman.  Most recently Ethan was seen as Henry Mesner in the episode "Born Psychopath" for Law & Order: SVU. 

 

Playing Carl Gallagher in SHAMELESS has been a perfect role for him, however, he is an animal lover in real life. He has a black cat named Bear, a Chinese water dragon and an albino pacman frog. Cutkosky lives and attends school in the Chicago area. He is very active and loves sports. Ethan plays lacrosse and likes to skate and bike.

 

 

SHANOLA HAMPTON – “Veronica Fisher”

 

Shanola Hampton currently stars alongside Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy and Joan Cusack in Showtime’s hit drama series “Shameless.”  Shanola stars as Veronica Fisher, the helpful and loveable friend to Fiona Gallagher (Rossum).  The fourth season will begin airing on Sunday, January 12, 2014.

 

Shanola recently starred in the independent film THEY DIE BY DAWN alongside Rosario Dawson, Idris Elba and Erykah Badu.  The film is about four outlaws with a bounty on each head who set a date for a shootout – the last one standing takes the collective bounty.  She also recently appeared in the independent feature THINGS NEVER SAID, in which she stars opposite Dorian Missick, Omari Hardwick and Michael Beach.

 

Hampton has previously attained a wide variety of television roles including stints on “Miami Medical,” “Eli Stone,” “Pepper Dennis,” “Related,” “Scrubs,” “Strong Medicine” and “Reba.” Film credits include THE MOSTLY UNFABULOUS SOCIAL LIFE OF ETHAN GREEN, YOU AGAIN and THE HANGED MAN.

 

Born in Long Island, New York and raised in Summerville, South Carolina, Hampton is one of four sisters.  She earned her undergraduate degree from Winthrop University before receiving her Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from The University of Illinois. A fitness buff, Hampton swims and does pilates to stay in shape.

 

Shanola currently resides in Los Angeles, California with her husband Darren Dukes.  They are currently expecting their first child together, due early next year.

 

 

JOAN CUSACK – “Sheila Jackson”

 

Nominated three times for an Emmy for her portrayal as Shelia Jackson, Joan Cusack has also been nominated twice for academy awards for her roles in “Working Girl” and “In and Out.”  A prominent Chicago stage actress, she has also starred Off Broadway in The road at Lincoln Center, and originated the role of  Susannah De Luce in Brilliant Traces at the Cherry Lane Theater in New York’s West Village. She has garnered critical praise for her role as “Jessie the Cowgirl” in Toy Story’s animated features, and has a degree in English from The University of Wisconsin.  Over her 35 year career, she has been in over 40 films.  She is a mother of two teenage boys and has been married for 17 years to businessman, Dick Burke.  She was a cast member of Saturday Night Live and most recently completed filming “Welcome to Me,” starring Kristen Wiig and “Kitchen Sink” with “Breaking Bad” cast member, Bob Odenkirk.  She is also the owner of Judy Maxwell Home, a boutique specializing in home décor and gifts in Chicago where she currently lives.

 

 

EMMA GREENWELL – “Mandy Milkovich”

 

Emma Greenwell was born in the United States but raised in London where she studied acting at the prestigous HURTWOOD HOUSE and LAMDA.  Shortly after graduating Emma moved to Los Angeles where she booked the role of MANDY on the critically acclaimed series SHAMELESS which returns for a fourth season in 2014. 

 

She recently wrapped the lead in the feature film WILD with Tom Hughes and will next be seen in THE HOLY GHOST PEOPLE opposite Joe Egender and Brendan McCarthy.  Emma has also recurred on the HBO series TRUE BLOOD.

 

She currently resides in Los Angeles.

 

 

NOEL FISHER – “Mickey Milkovich”

 

Noel Fisher has become one of the entertainment industry’s most sought after and versatile performers, bringing to life memorable characters on the big and small screens over the past few years. From a rookie Marine fighting aliens throughout the demolished streets of Santa Monica, to a bully on the snowy sidewalks of Chicago, and a Romanian vampire several thousand years old, Fisher has showcased his wide range of acting ability in some of the hottest projects on screen today. In 2014, Fisher can be seen starring as Michelangelo in the highly anticipated, Paramount Pictures film TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. He will also return to television, appearing as Mickey Milkovich opposite William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum on the hit Showtime series “Shameless.” Fisher recently appeared as Vladimir in the final chapter of the worldwide phenomenon, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2. He also was seen in the record-breaking History Channel miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” as Ellison ‘Cotton Top‘ Mounts opposite Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. Its Memorial Day debut drew 13.9 million viewers, a new high for an entertainment show on ad-supported cable TV.

 

Originally from Vancouver, B.C. Fisher has been steadily gaining momentum as an actor since he was 14 years old. His very first role was in the TV movie “The Sheldon Kennedy Story” for CBC in 1999. The part landed Fisher his first GEMINI nomination, [the equivalent to the U.S. Primetime Emmy Awards] which was followed with a second nomination for his work on the hit Canadian series “Godiva’s” [2005-2006.]

 

Once gaining traction in Canada, Fisher proved that his talent would translate to the US market, appearing in the blockbuster Columbia feature film BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, with his portrayal of rookie Marine Pfc. Shaun Lenihan opposite Aaron Eckhart. He has also made his mark in television, appearing on top series such as CBS’ “Two and a Half Men,” “The Mentalist,” and “Medium,” a recurring role on NBC’s “Law and Order: SVU,” Showtime’s “Huff,” and FOX’s “Bones.” In 2008, he went to Sundance with the independent film “RED” [Official Selection] alongside Brian Cox. 2010 was a standout year for Fisher, as he was seen in the HBO nominated miniseries “The Pacific,” the follow up to the hit miniseries “Band of Brothers.” His other television credits from the past two years include solid performances in FOX’s “Lie to Me,” FX’s “Terriers,” CBS’ “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” and TNT’s “Dark Blue.” Audiences may best remember Fisher from his breakout performance in the critically acclaimed FX series “The Riches,” portraying Cal, the conniving and clever son of Eddie Izzard and Mini Driver.

 

When not working, Fisher loves to go camping, go to the beach, and just hang out at home with a good movie and frozen yogurt. He is also an animal lover and supports the efforts of The Humane Society of the United States, as well as the youth outreach charity Visual Impact Now.

 

 

CAMERON MONAGHAN – “Ian Gallagher”

 

Cameron is a series regular on the international hit show, SHAMELESS on Showtime. The 4th season is currently in production and Cameron continues to be a fan favorite in the role of Ian Gallagher, son of Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) and sister of Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum). In addition to his work on the series, Cameron has been has recently wrapped lead roles in back to back 2014 Weinstein theatrical releases: THE GIVER, opposite Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, directed by Phillip Noyce and VAMPIRE ACADEMY written by Daniel Waters and directed by Mark Waters.

 

Cameron’s theatrical debut was in THE MUSIC MAN (2003) as the character Winthrop Paroo opposite Victor Garber, Matthew Broderick, and Kristen Chenoweth. The musical feature film was produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan of Storyline Entertainment and distributed by Disney. Ron Howard originally played the role in the 1962 version of The Music Man. Both Cameron and Ron Howard were 8 years old when they filmed their roles.

 

Cameron has appeared in a broad range of dramatic and comedic projects including over a dozen television guest star roles. His most recent guest lead appearances were in LAW & ORDER: SVU and NCIS. Cameron was submitted for an Emmy nomination by both productions. Mariska Hargitay was submitted for an Emmy nomination for the same episode of SVU for her scenes with Cameron. While not shooting SHAMELESS, Cameron has completed two independent feature films including the lead role in the Joe Hahn directed MALL opposite Vincent D’Onofrio, Gina Gershon, and Peter Stormare. He also was one of the leads in the Disney studio feature PROM directed by Joe Nussbaum.

 

Cameron will next be seen in the lead role in the Carter Smith (THE RUINS) directed feature entitled JAMIE MARKS IS DEAD, which is being produced by Alex Orlofsky (BLUE VALENTINE).

STEVE HOWEY – “Kevin Ball”

 

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Steve Howey spent his early childhood growing up on sailboats with his parents.  After his second year in college, Howey decided to pursue acting and enrolled in his father’s (acting coach Bill Howey) acting class.  Howey recently completed filming the independent feature “See You In Valhalla” with Sarah Hyland.  Other film credits include

 

“Something Borrowed,” with Kate Hudson and Jon Krasinski, “Conception” with Julie Bowen and David Arquette, “Bride Wars” with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, and the independent feature “Losing Control.”  Recent television credits include “Sons of Anarchy,” “New Girl,” “Psych,” and “Reba.”

 

 

JOHN WELLS – Executive Producer

 

John Wells is one of the most prolific writers, directors and producers for television, film and the stage.  Over the past two decades, Wells has been a creative force behind some of primetime's biggest hit series, including ER, The West Wing, and Third Watch. He currently serves as executive producer on Showtime's Emmy(r)- nominated Shameless,  and has previously served as Executive Producer on the critically acclaimed Southland for TNT, the Emmy(r) and Golden Globe(r)-winning Mildred Pierce for HBO, and the Emmy(r) And Golden-Globe(r) nominated China Beach.

 

Shows produced by John Wells have received over 270 Emmy nominations with 55 Emmy wins, 5 Peabody Awards, Producers Guild Awards, a Humanitas Prize (nominated 7 times).During its fifteen year run, ER earned 122 Emmy nominations, the most in television history.   A seven-time Writers Guild Award nominee, in 2007, Wells received the WGA's prestigious Paddy Chayefsky Television Laurel Award, given to writers who have advanced the literature of television and made outstanding contributions to the profession of television writers. In 2005, Wells was awarded the David Susskind Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild of America.

 

Wells has also served as President of the Writers Guild of America, West from 2009-2011 and previously served as its President from 1999-2001 and was vital to the success of the 2001 MBA contract negotiations.

 

Upcoming, Wells will release the film August: Oscage County, which he directed from Tracy Letts' script, starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Ewan McGregor.  Weinstein will release the film December 25, 2013. Previously, Wells wrote and directed The Company Men, released by Weinstein in 2011 and starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Previous feature production credits include Carroll Ballard's acclaimed drama Duma, Peter Kominsky's White Oleander, Neil Jordan's The Good Thief, Andrzej Bartkowiak's Doom, and Michael Mayer's A Home at the End of the World. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, and raised in Denver, Colorado, Wells graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor of fine arts and later earned a Masters degree in film and television at the University of Southern California, where he also serves on the school's Television Executive Advisory Council.
