Simon & Schuster Inc. Launches Galley Grab A New eGalley Program

NEW YORK, November 4, 2009-Beginning today, Simon & Schuster is offering electronic galleys of S&S titles to reviewers and media, booksellers, and other key publishing trade contacts through Galley Grab, the company's beta launch eGalley program (www.galleygrab.com).   eGalleys offered by Simon & Schuster are DRM protected Portable Document Format files that do not allow copying, and can be read using the Adobe Digital Editions desktop reader, on the most recent versions of the Sony Reader, the nook, and other devices that support Adobe Digital Editions.

Using Galley Grab, Simon & Schuster employees will be able to send links for eGalleys of specific upcoming titles to their industry contacts.  Once solicited, recipients can then register with Galley Grab (a one-time process), and upon authorization can download the specific eGalley.  Simon & Schuster eGalleys will expire on the book's publication date.

"The world is becoming ever-more accepting of reading electronically, and we have been receiving an increasing number of requests for electronic review copies," said Ellie Hirschhorn, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer of Simon & Schuster.  "While we do not expect this to entirely replace physical galleys in the near future, Galley Grab is a convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly way to promote our upcoming titles, and not least, help us to expand the universe of those who can now have the chance to read our books before publication."

The first title to be made available through Galley Grab is THE STORY OF STUFF: How Our Obsession with Stuff Is Trashing the Planet, Our Communities, and Our Health-and A Vision for Change by Annie Leonard (Free Press/ March 2010/ $26.00).

"We are delighted and think it fitting that we can help launch our eGalley program with Annie Leonard's environmental call to arms," said Martha Levin, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Free Press. "We hope that our industry colleagues will join in the spirit of the book by taking the opportunity to read this wonderful work, in digital format, before publication."

The Galley Grab program was built in-house by Simon & Schuster Digital.  The company expects to add additional features and functionality to future versions of the program.
