New York, N.Y., Thursday, September 22, 2011 – Simon & Schuster announced today the acquisition of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s autobiography, TOTAL RECALL: My Unbelievably True Life Story (working title), which will be published globally in October 2012.
Chronicling his embodiment of the American Dream, the former California governor discusses his high-stakes journey to the United States, creating the international bodybuilding industry out of the sands of Venice Beach, breathing life into cinema’s most iconic characters, and becoming one of the leading political figures of our time combating global warming and partisan bureaucracy. Considered one of the most anticipated autobiographies of this generation, Schwarzenegger presents a larger-than-life portrait of his illustrious, controversial and ever-entertaining life in and out of the public eye.
"Truly, Arnold is one of the most fascinating figures of our time, and one of the greatest success stories in the world,” said Jonathan Karp, publisher of Simon & Schuster. "Nobody has a life story even close to his. To go from poor immigrant to world class athlete to the biggest movie star in the world to Governor of California is an incredible journey." Simon & Schuster was also the publishing house of Schwarzenegger’s first book, bestseller The Education of a Bodybuilder, which has never been out of print since its release in 1977.
Schwarzenegger began working on his biography in 2010, and earlier this year started formally collaborating with Peter Petre, former Executive Editor of Fortune and the co-author of bestselling autobiographies by Alan Greenspan, Norman Schwarzkopf, and Thomas Watson, Jr.
Simon & Schuster, which controls World rights and will be selling the book to international publishers this October at the Frankfurt Book Fair, will publish the book in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. German rights have been sold to Hoffmann und Campe and Dutch rights to A.W. Bruna. Simultaneous with hardcover edition and eBook, S&S Audio will publish an unabridged audio book.
Schwarzenegger recently signed on to film Expendables 2 and will be filming Last Stand in Autumn 2011 while he continues to dedicate his time and energies to philanthropy, policy reform and entertainment ventures. Schwarzenegger recently created the non-profit R20, which works to develop and implement low-carbon and climate resilient projects through cooperation among subnational governments around the world, non-governmental organizations, corporations and educational institutions.
