Simon & Schuster to Publish Chris Cleave’s New Novel
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW YORK, NY, Monday, October 3, 2011 – It was announced today that Simon & Schuster will publish #1 bestselling author Chris Cleave’s new novel Gold in July 2012.
Chris Cleave is the author of Little Bee, which currently has more than 1.6 million copies in circulation (combined print and ebooks) in the U.S. since its publication in 2009. The novel has appeared on numerous bestseller lists worldwide, including 75 weeks on the New York Times paperback trade fiction list, several weeks at #1. Little Bee was short listed for the Costa Book Award for Best Novel in the UK and was a Citywide Reads selection in several U.S. cities. Rights to the novel have been sold in 33 countries, and BBC Films acquired film rights with Nicole Kidman attached as star and producer.
Building on the tradition of Little Bee, a novel about the complicated friendship between a British widow, her young son, and a Nigerian refugee, Chris Cleave again writes with elegance, humor and passion about friendship, marriage, parenthood, tragedy, and redemption.
Gold is the story of Zoe and Kate, world class athletes who have been friends and rivals since their first day of Elite training. They’ve loved, fought, betrayed, forgiven, consoled, gloried and grown up together. Now on the eve of London 2012, their last Olympics, both women will be tested to their physical and emotional limits. They must confront each other and their own mortality to decide, when lives are at stake: What would you sacrifice for the people you love, if it meant giving up the thing that was most important to you in the world?
“Chris writes the kind of stories you can lose yourself in completely,” said Senior Editor Sarah Knight of Simon & Schuster. “He is wise, funny, insightful, and has the utmost respect for his readers. You cannot read his novels without being profoundly affected by the characters, and Gold is proof that he just keeps getting better and better.”
Cleave says: “I’m thrilled to be continuing this very happy relationship with Simon & Schuster. With their enduring support I’ve toured all over the U.S. and been received with nothing but warmth and kindness by audiences at book clubs, book stores, public libraries, private homes, city reads programs, synagogues and churches, universities and literary festivals. It has been an honor and a pleasure to spend time with so many engaged, committed and compassionate readers, and it has become enormously important to me not to let them down. I put everything I have into this new novel, and I’m proud to be returning to America with it to renew my acquaintance with so many good friends.”
Cleave is represented by Jennifer Joel at International Creative Management in the U.S. and by Peter Straus at Rogers, Coleridge & White in the United Kingdom. His novel Little Bee was published (as The Other Hand) in the U.K. by Sceptre, a division of Hodder & Stoughton, and in Canada by Bond Street Books, a division of Doubleday; both publishers will also publish Gold.
In 2009, Simon & Schuster acquired the rights to re-issue Cleave’s highly acclaimed debut novel, Incendiary, in the U.S. Incendiary was the winner of the W. Somerset Maugham Award, the U.S. Book-of-the-Month Club First Fiction Award, France’s Prix des Lecteurs Prix Spécial du Jury, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and was a Washington Post and Economist “book of the year” in 2006. Currently, Simon & Schuster has over 190,000 copies of Incendiary in circulation (combined print and ebooks).
