Press Release back to list

Skyrim Annihilates GameSpot Traffic Records Previously Set By Call of Duty

SAN FRANCISCO – December 19, 2011 – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), a magical role-playing game set in a dragon-infested land, has been chosen as Game of the Year by GameSpot ( GameSpot’s editors played hundreds of hours in dozens of games before deciding that this provided the best all round value and entertainment.

In addition, action shooter Portal 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Mac) took home nine awards, the highest number this year and the independently produced role-playing game To The Moon (PC) won Best Story.

More than any other game this year, Skyrim inspired gamers and games journalists to get creative by sharing, commenting and creating their own tributes on YouTube. GameSpot’s “Gameplay Introduction” video for Skyrim, featuring game director Todd Howard has achieved more views on YouTube than any other GameSpot video since the game’s launch, including a multi player demo for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The full list of GameSpot videos dedicated to the game, including ‘Sexy Times in Skyrim’, is available

“The competition for Game of the Year was fierce,” said John Davison, VP of Programming, GameSpot. “There were so many fantastic games released throughout the year that were deserving of accolades, but ultimately we felt that Skyrim represented the best experience for gamers overall.”

Finalists in this year’s Game of the Year category included Batman: Arkham City (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U), Dark Souls (PS3, Xbox 360), DiRT 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), Gears of War 3 (Xbox 360), Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Nintendo 3DS), Portal 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Mac), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC, Xbox 360) , Total War Shogun 2 (PC) and Xenoblade Chronicles (Nintendo Wii).
