"OFF THE TEE" WITH PETER KOSTIS

(On Riviera Country Club):  This has always been known as a ball striker's course. You know you want to shape your shots. It's not a golf course that can be easily overpowered. It's an old traditional golf course, which is why a lot of players like it so much. You can't just take your driver and bomb it away. You've got to shape it right-to-left, left-to-right, put it in position and control your golf ball to the greens. The key is how much rain we get because right now the golf course is in perfect shape. It is playing firm and fast but if they get a lot of rain it's going to change how things unfold on the weekend.

(On field and defending champion Steve Stricker):   The field is very good. For starters, this is Phil Mickelson's fifth week out in a row. He showed some signs of brilliance.  He hasn't closed the deal yet, but he is getting better every week so I look to see him in the mix.  Steve is starting off slowly, which is not unexpected for a guy out of Wisconsin in the winter time. He usually comes to Scottsdale for a few days to work on his game. He came right after Christmas when we had our cold blast so he didn't get many reps in before he went to Hawaii. So he is still rounding into form.

(On Jhonny Vegas):   He took off last week and didn't play at Pebble Beach. I talked to him in Phoenix and he was getting a little tired.  It's the stress with being a winner and a rookie, and a media darling. It's taking its toll. I'm looking for him to come back refreshed this week and hopefully play well.  He's a great personality.
