The CBS Television Network, home of Super Bowl XLVII, continues its 53^rd year broadcasting the NFL with coverage of THE NFL ON CBS on Sunday, Oct. 14 (1:00-7:00 PM, ET) beginning with THE NFL TODAY, the Network’s one-hour studio show (12:00 NOON-1:00 PM, ET), live from THE NFL TODAY studio in New York City.

       THE NFL ON CBS lead announce team of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms call the action from the Indianapolis Colts-New York Jets game live from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.  Lance Barrow is the coordinating producer and lead game producer and Mike Arnold is the lead game director.

PHIL SIMMS

(On Indianapolis): For a first-year coach, new general manager and new quarterback, it’s been pretty impressive how the Colts organized it so quickly and how much they do. Their defense is very versatile and shows a lot of coverages and does a lot of stuff that confuses offenses. On the offensive side, it’s like they’ve been together for five years. The receivers, quarterback and offensive line and offensive coordinator, they just do everything.

(On Colts comeback win over Packers): I know they did it for Chuck Pagano, but any win is a big win in the NFL.  When you beat a team that won the Super Bowl two years ago and were 15-1 last year, it’s great for your program. It gives everybody a lift. It makes everybody believe.  And of course, it was great for their coach who’s not feeling well.  Emotionally, the Colts are going to be on a high this Sunday against the Jets because of the way they finished and the belief of what the coaches have been telling them since the start of training camp.

(On Jets losing two in a row): Before the season, the Jets had to look at the first five games and think, "Okay, we’ve got Pittsburgh on the road, San Francisco and Houston."  You know all three of those games are going to be tough even if you play your best and have all your players.  The positive about the Jets is they gave themselves chances to win against the Texans.  Nobody thought they could.  They have to have that effort and passion every week. I want to see how the Jets approach being 2-3 at this time of the year.  The Giants and Patriots are Super Bowl contenders and they’re 3-2.  Everybody’s painting the end of the world for the Jets, which is amazing for a 2-3 team.

 

DAN DIERDORF

(On Atlanta): Atlanta is playing good, sound football.  Offensively this team is a defensive coordinator’s nightmare.  They have talent at every level on the offense: two wide receivers in Julio Jones and Roddy White, a tight end in Tony Gonzalez, who adds to his NFL records every time he touches the football, an outstanding, bruising running back in Michael Turner, and Matt Ryan at quarterback, who is just getting better and better.

(On Oakland): They are a work in progress with a new coach, a new offensive system and a new way of running the football.  It’s going to take a while for the Raiders to hit their stride.  They are banged up defensively as both of their starting corners have been hurt.  They’ve been getting gouged pretty good.  Let’s be realistic, on paper this is quite a mismatch, especially playing in the fast-track of the Dome in Atlanta.  The Falcons get going sometimes like they’re a video game.
