New York, NY — May 1, 2017 – In an exclusive airing on Monday and Tuesday, INSIDE EDITION speaks with Nicole Contreras, the ex-girlfriend of Mel B’s estranged husband – Stephen Belafonte.
Contreras, who is the mother of Belafonte’s 12-year-old daughter Giselle, says she believes the “America’s Got Talent” judge’s allegations that Belafonte was abusive in their marriage. She tells INSIDE EDITION’s anchor Deborah Norville he physically beat her when they were living together. “He was violent towards me more toward the end of our relationship,” Contreras says. She adds that on one occasion, “He grabbed my phone and smashed it, and threw me up against a wall, and had me pinned against the wall. I get the chills just talking about it now.” Belafonte pleaded no contest to domestic battery against Contreras. Belafonte has denied Mel B’s allegations.
On Friday, Belafonte reportedly filed a police report and gave the Los Angeles police department an audio tape, recorded on March 20th, of a woman who he says is Contreras, trying to extort him for up to $1 million.
Now, Contreras is reacting, telling INSIDE EDITION’s Jim Moret that Belafonte is making up the extortion allegations to deflect Contreras’ claims that he was abusive toward her. “I think it’s ridiculous. I think [Belafonte’s] in a bad place, trying to grasp at straws, trying to figure out how he can make me look less credible.”
She adds, “That is not me on the tape, and I have no idea where he concocted that.”
INSIDE EDITION asks Contreras that if it is her on the tape, and she hasn’t been notified that the conversation was recorded, would she consider legal action against Belafonte. “Any legal action that would be taken against him would be separate. You never know down the road what could happen,” she says.
INSIDE EDITION has reached out to Belafonte for comment, but has not received a response.
