JAY HOWELL NAMED VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER OF CBS TELEVISION STATIONS’ PITTSBURGH PROPERTIES

Veteran television stations executive Jay Howell has been named Vice President and General Manager of the CBS Television Stations’ Pittsburgh properties, KDKA-TV, WPCW-TV and CBSPittsburgh.com. The announcement was made today by Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations.

Howell, who currently serves as Vice President and General Manager of KOVR-TV and KMAX-TV, the CBS-owned stations in Sacramento, will assume his new role in July. He succeeds Chris Pike, who in May retired as general manager of the company’s Pittsburgh properties.

This move represents a homecoming for Howell, who learned the local stations business from his father John, the general manager of WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh from 1984-2001. Jay Howell’s local connections also include graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in managerial economics and industrial management. He spent the first 10 years of his career with WTOV-TV in nearby Steubenville, Ohio. His wife, Lori, grew up in Shaler Township and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh.

We are thrilled to have someone with Jay’s enthusiasm, long track record of success and great local connections leading our operations in Pittsburgh,” Dunn said. “KDKA has long been one of the top stations in the country, and we are pleased to have Jay moving back home to help us build on its great legacy and continue to grow our business on the digital platforms that will ensure our future success.”

As much as I have loved my time in Sacramento and the great team we have at CBS 13 and KMAX, coming home to Pittsburgh and having the privilege of working at KDKA is a dream come true for me and my family,” Howell said. “I am grateful to Peter for giving me this amazing opportunity and look forward to working with my new colleagues in Pittsburgh and collectively raising the bar with how we serve our loyal viewers, community partners and advertisers.”

The only potential downside for me is getting flooded with requests from family members and friends, asking for Steelers tickets.”

Prior to joining KOVR, KMAX and the CBS Television Stations family in August 2017, Howell served as Vice President of Broadcast Markets for Media General, where he oversaw the company’s station operations, including several CBS and CW affiliates, in 14 markets across the country. Prior to leaving Media General in 2017 when the sale of the company to Nexstar was finalized, Howell spent four years as a member of the CBS Affiliates Board.

Howell’s background also includes more than 13 years with LIN Media, most recently as Vice President, Television (2013-2014), where he oversaw operations for 46 stations in 23 markets. Prior to that, he was a Regional Vice President, Television (2012-2013), with responsibility for 13 stations in seven markets. He previously served 11 years as Vice President and General Manager of WPRI-TV (CBS) and WNAC-TV (Fox), which at the time were the LIN-owned stations serving Providence, R.I. and New Bedford, Mass. He began his station management career as the general manager of KRBC-TV in Abilene, Texas and KACB-TV in San Angelo, Texas.

He and his wife, Lori, are the parents of two children, John and Lilly.
