Press Release back to list

NEW YORK, June 21, 2011—Mark Kelly, Navy Captain and Astronaut and Congresswoman Gabrielle (“Gabby”) Giffords will publish their memoir with Scribner. The untitled memoir will be a deeply personal account of Mark Kelly’s and Gabrielle Giffords’ lives together. The memoir will recount their courtship, Ms. Giffords’ rise in U.S. politics, and the tragic January 8th shooting in Arizona which killed six people and gravely wounded Representative Giffords and twelve others. The book will also tell the story of her recovery process and will trace Mark Kelly’s career from decorated Desert Storm combat pilot to his recent mission as the commander of Space Shuttle Endeavour’s final flight.

World and audio rights were acquired from Washington, D.C. attorney Robert B. Barnett by Susan Moldow, Executive Vice President and Publisher and Nan Graham, Senior Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of Scribner who will also edit the book. Jeffrey Zaslow, Wall Street Journal columnist, author of The Girls from Ames and co-author of The Last Lecture, will collaborate with Giffords and Kelly on the book. A publication date has not been determined. A portion of the authors’ net proceeds will go to charity in Tucson and Arizona.

“Gabby and I are forever grateful for the heartfelt support we’ve received over these many months. We are looking forward to sharing our story,” said Mark Kelly.

“The events of January 8th stirred our nation,” said Susan Moldow. “We are deeply honored to publish Mark Kelly’s and Gabby Giffords’ memoir which will fully unfold the remarkable story of two exceptionally brave public servants.”
