CBS NEWS FINISHES THE 2015-16 BROADCAST YEAR AS THE ONLY NETWORK NEWS DIVISION WITH AUDIENCE GROWTH ON BOTH MORNING AND EVENING NEWS BROADCASTS

CBS NEWS ALSO DOMINATES ON WEEKENDS WITH “60 MINUTES,” “48 HOURS,” “CBS SUNDAY MORNING” AND “FACE THE NATION”

CBS News finished the 2015-16 broadcast year as the only network news division with audience growth on both morning and evening news broadcasts, according to Nielsen most current ratings. CBS THIS MORNING (7:00-9:00 AM, ET/PT) delivered CBS’s best audience in the morning in at least 28 years (since the advent of people meters) and the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY (6:30-7:00 PM, ET) posting CBS’s highest ratings in the time period in 10 years.

CBS News also dominated on weekends with CBS SUNDAY MORNING and FACE THE NATION remaining #1 in their categories for the broadcast year. 60 MINUTES remains America’s #1 news program and 48 HOURS is Saturday’s #1 primetime (non-sports) broadcast and has been for 10 consecutive years, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the 2015-16 television season.

Here is a recap of how CBS News broadcasts performed for the 2015-16 broadcast year, according to Nielsen most current ratings:

  • CBS THIS MORNING finished with the largest audience for a CBS morning news program in at least 28 years. CBS THIS MORNING was the only network morning news broadcast to post year-to-year gains in viewers and all key demos for the 2015-2016 outing. CBS THIS MORNING also delivered CBS’s closest competitive position in the morning with NBC in 28 years and with ABC in 17 years. CBS THIS MORNING finished up +7% in viewers (3.58m from 3.35m), + 13% in adults 25-54 (0.9 rating from 0.8), + 11% in women 25-54 (1.0 from 0.9) and +17% in women 18-49 (0.7 from 0.6) compared with the year before. ABC posted declines in all measures: down -9% in viewers, -19% in adults 25-54, -14% in women 25-54 and -14% in women 18-49, compared with the 2014-2015 broadcast year. NBC is down: -2% in viewers, -5% in women 25-54 and -7% in women 18-49 compared with the previous season.

  • The CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY finished with CBS’s highest ratings in the time period in 10 years (since the 2005-06 broadcast year). The CBS EVENING NEWS is up in viewers (7.03m from 6.98m) compared to last year. This year marks the sixth consecutive broadcast year of viewer gains for the CBS EVENING NEWS, the first time any network evening news broadcast posted six consecutive broadcast years of viewer gains in the 28 years since the advent of Nielsen people meters in 1987. Additionally, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH SCOTT PELLEY closed the viewership gap with NBC by 113,000 viewers compared to last year—the closest CBS has been to NBC in viewers for a broadcast year in 15 years (since 2000-2001). NBC finished the 2015-16 broadcast year with viewership declines (-1%, 8.61m from 8.66m).

  • CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY is up +4% in viewers (2.14m from 2.07m) and posted CBS’s largest overall Saturday morning news viewer delivery since the network added a Saturday morning news broadcast in September 1997.

  • CBS SUNDAY MORNING finished as the #1 Sunday morning news program in viewers and adults 25-54, and posted its best audience delivery in at least 28 years, according to Nielsen most current ratings. CBS SUNDAY MORNING finished the broadcast year delivering 5.92 million viewers and a 1.3/07 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. Compared to the previous year, CBS SUNDAY MORNING was up +1% in viewers (from 5.84m) and even in adults 25-54.

  • FACE THE NATION finished as America’s #1 Sunday morning public affairs program for the fourth consecutive year, with its largest audience in at least 28 years, according to Nielsen most current ratings. In John Dickerson’s first broadcast year as anchor, FACE THE NATION delivered 3.65 million viewers (up +11%, from 3.30m compared to last year). This marks the sixth consecutive broadcast year of viewer gains for FACE THE NATION. FACE THE NATION delivered 0.8/04 in adults 25-54, the demographic most important to those who advertise in news, during the broadcast year (up +14%, from 0.7/04) compared to last broadcast year.
