48 HOURS: “Playing by the Rules” was Saturday’s #1 primetime program with viewers and adults 25-54, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for March 12.

48 HOURS (10:14-11:14 PM) delivered 4.95 million viewers and a 1.3/04 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. Compared to last year at 10:08PM, 48 HOURS was up +18% in adults 25-54, and +8% in viewers.  48 HOURS was the night's #1 prime program in both viewers and adults 25-54.

Saturday’s broadcast featured Richard Schlesinger and 48 HOURS’ investigation into a murder case against David Mark Temple, a former football star and coach, who was convicted in 2007 for the 1999 murder of his wife, Belinda. It’s a case 48 HOURS has been covering for nine years. The trial pitted two of the biggest names in the legal world against each other:  renowned defense attorney Dick DeGuerin, who successfully defended billionaire Robert Durst, and legendary prosecutor Kelly Siegler, who now stars in her own TV show. At trial, prosecutors maintained Temple was having an affair and wanted his wife out of the picture, while DeGuerin suggested Belinda Temple was killed in a burglary gone bad. 

Seigler maintains Temple “was convicted after a six-week trial by a fair and impartial jury for executing his wife and unborn child. He was given a life sentence. He’s sitting behind bars. And that’s where he deserves to be.”

But Temple’s attorneys, Stan Schneider and Casie Gotro, argue that Siegler withheld crucial evidence from the defense.

Last July, a Texas judge recommended that Temple get a new trial. Now it’s up to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to make the final call.
